Monaghan Courthouse

Imposing 19th-century neoclassical courthouse with a four-column Doric portico

A solid limestone block at the head of Church Square, built in 1829 to designs by Joseph Welland. It has a heavy four-column Doric portico and the kind of unfussy, slightly intimidating presence that 19th-century courthouses in Irish county towns tend to share. Still in use as a working courthouse, so the interior is not generally open to visitors, but the exterior is worth a circuit on the way to the museum.
