Cathedral of the Assumption

The Cathedral of the Assumption is Tuam's Roman Catholic cathedral, completed in 1837 in Decorated Gothic style. Its scale makes sense only if you know the background: Catholics had been pushed out of St Mary's and other churches under the Penal Laws, then rebuilt publicly in the 19th century.

Inside, look for the stained glass and the sober confidence of a church built after a long period of restriction. Together with St Mary's, it shows the split religious history of the town in a way a single monument could not.
