Tuam

County Galway ecclesiastical town centred on two cathedrals, a high cross, and medieval ruins.

Tuam is a small County Galway town whose best reason for existing as a travel stop is its church history. It was an early ecclesiastical centre under St Jarlath and, for a time in the 12th century, important enough to be associated with Rory O'Connor, the last native High King of Ireland.

The town centre is compact and plain, but the religious layers are unusually dense. St Mary's Cathedral holds the High Cross of Tuam and pieces of the medieval cathedral story; the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption shows the 19th-century revival after the Penal Laws; Teampall Jarlath marks the older monastic core.

Tuam is not a polished west-of-Ireland show town. It works best as a thoughtful stop north of Galway, especially if you care about early Irish Christianity, broken medieval sites, and towns whose importance has ebbed but not disappeared.
