Westport House

Westport House is an 18th-century Georgian mansion set in 400 acres of gardens and parkland at the edge of Westport town. The house is open to visitors and the interior preserves an impressive collection of period furnishings, paintings, and family silver. The estate has been in the Browne family — descendants of Grace O'Malley — since it was built.

The grounds include formal gardens, a lake, and the Westport Adventure Park — a collection of family activities added in more recent decades to help fund the estate's maintenance. The adventure park aspect can feel incongruous, but the house and gardens themselves are well worth seeing. The walk from the town centre to the estate gates takes about fifteen minutes.

A story
Westport House was built partly on the foundations of a castle belonging to Grace O'Malley — the 16th-century pirate queen who controlled the seas around Clew Bay and famously met Queen Elizabeth I. The dungeons beneath the house are original features from O'Malley's fortification. The estate's architect was Richard Cassels, the same man responsible for Leinster House in Dublin, now the seat of the Irish parliament.
