Eucharistic Miracle

The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano is the town's best-known sight, preserved in the church of San Francesco. Pilgrims come to see the relics associated with the miracle, displayed in a chapel that is more intimate than grand.

For non-pilgrims, the visit is still worthwhile because it explains why Lanciano has such a religious pull. The church sits in the old centre, so it is easy to fold into a short walk between the cathedral, Santa Maria Maggiore, and the museum.

A story
The relic is traditionally linked to an eighth-century monk who doubted the real presence during Mass. Medieval Lanciano grew around many trades, but this single story made the town a stop for pilgrims for more than a thousand years.
