Getting There

Opi is remote by Italian standards, and that is part of its appeal. The village sits along the SS83 Marsicana road that winds through the national park, roughly midway between Pescasseroli and Villetta Barrea.

The nearest train station is Avezzano, about 70 kilometres northwest, with connections to Rome (roughly two hours by regional train). From Avezzano, ARPA buses run to Pescasseroli, from where Opi is a short drive or taxi ride. Service is infrequent, especially on weekends, so check schedules in advance.

By car from Rome, take the A25 motorway towards Pescara, exit at Celano or the Pescina junction, and follow signs through the park. The drive takes about two and a half hours in good conditions. The roads through the park are scenic but narrow and winding — not ideal after dark or in heavy snow. In winter, carry snow chains.
