The Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park offers superb high-altitude walking, and the trailheads begin just outside the village. The usual base for the bigger routes is the Campo Imperatore plateau, about 10 kilometres up the mountain road at around 1,800 metres -- a vast, treeless upland that feels almost Tibetan on a clear day. From here, the Corno Grande (2,912m) is accessible to experienced walkers; it is the highest peak in the Apennines, and the views on the ascent take in the whole of central Italy. The Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) maintains well-marked trails throughout the park.
