Aliano is genuinely remote. There is no rail connection and bus services are infrequent and timed for local commuters rather than visitors. The practical approach is by car: the village is roughly 100 kilometres from Potenza and 80 kilometres from Matera, on roads that wind through increasingly empty hills. The drive itself — particularly the approach from the Agri valley — is part of the experience.
If you are visiting without a car, it is theoretically possible to reach Aliano by bus from Stigliano, but schedules are limited and the journey requires advance planning. A hire car from Matera or Potenza gives far more flexibility.
