Amaro Lucano

Amaro Lucano is one of Italy's better-known herbal bitters, produced in a distillery on the outskirts of Pisticci since 1894. The dark, slightly sweet liqueur is made from a blend of herbs and spices — the exact recipe is not public — and has been a fixture on Italian bar menus for over a century.

The distillery does not have a formal visitor centre in the classic sense, but the product is deeply embedded in local identity and is found in every bar and restaurant in Basilicata. Trying it as a digestivo after a meal in Pisticci is an easy and appropriate way to end an evening.

A story
Amaro Lucano was created in 1894 by Pasquale Vena, a pastry maker in Pisticci, using a blend of over thirty herbs and botanicals. The recipe remains a closely guarded family secret and production has remained in Pisticci for over a century, making it one of the few major Italian bitters still produced in the same town where it was invented.
