Museo Provinciale

Calabria's main regional museum, with Greek and Roman archaeology from Magna Graecia sites

The Museo Provinciale di Catanzaro is the main archaeological and cultural museum for the Calabria region, holding collections drawn from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and medieval periods of a region that was thoroughly colonised by ancient Greece. Calabria was part of Magna Graecia — Greater Greece — and the museum's holdings reflect the density of ancient settlement, with ceramics, coins, sculpture, and everyday objects from sites across the province.

The Byzantine section is particularly worthwhile — Calabria has a deep Byzantine heritage, and the collection of medieval religious objects and icons rarely seen outside the region is genuinely unusual. The museum is located in the historic centre and can easily be combined with a visit to the cathedral and the central piazza. Opening hours are limited; check ahead.
