Scolacium Archaeological Park is one of the strongest ancient sites near Catanzaro, set where Greek, Roman, and medieval layers overlap close to the Ionian coast. Visitors come for the Roman theatre, forum area, roads, and the haunting remains of the Norman basilica of Santa Maria della Roccella.
The site rewards imagination: stone fragments, olive trees, open sky, and the scale of a city that once mattered. It is a good half-day for travellers who want Calabria beyond beaches and modern hill towns.
