Calatrava Bridge (Ponte San Francesco di Paola)

The Ponte San Francesco di Paola is a footbridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, spanning the Busento River at the edge of Cosenza's historic centre. Completed in 1999, it's one of Calatrava's smaller works but characteristic of his style — a single white parabolic arch carrying cables that support the deck below.

The bridge connects the historic lower town to the modern city and has become one of Cosenza's most photographed structures. It works especially well at dusk when the white concrete takes on a warm glow. The setting — the Busento runs between the old town hill and the modern city — frames it well from either bank.

A story
Santiago Calatrava's bridge for Cosenza was commissioned in the 1990s and completed in 1999, part of a broader attempt to bring major architectural investment to Calabria. It spans the Busento River — the same river in whose bed, according to tradition, the Visigothic king Alaric I was buried in 410 AD after his army diverted it, hid the body, and then returned the waters. Whether this accounts for Cosenza's enthusiasm for a Spanish architect designing a monument over the river is not recorded.
