Gioia Tauro's seafront promenade runs along the coast south of the port, backed by a narrow beach and offering some of the best views on the Tyrrhenian coast. On clear days — which is most days — you can see the silhouettes of the Aeolian Islands: Stromboli, Lipari, Vulcano, and the others ranged along the horizon. Closer in, the port cranes punctuate the skyline to the north, providing an industrial counterpoint to the blue water.
The lungomare is busiest in the evening during the summer passeggiata, when the entire town seems to walk its length. The century-old Gaslini citrus processing plant, an atmospheric Art Nouveau industrial building that still stands on the waterfront, is a local landmark and the setting for free outdoor concerts in July and August. The beach itself is about 3 km of sand and pebbles — wide, not particularly crowded, and entirely free.
