When to Go

Calabria has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. July and August bring temperatures above 35C and the beaches fill with Italian holidaymakers. June and September are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, uncrowded enough to breathe.

Spring is beautiful in the mountains. The Sila and Pollino are green and wildflowered from April to June, and the hilltowns are at their most peaceful. Autumn brings mushroom season in the Sila and harvest festivals across the region.

Calabria celebrates with gusto year-round. Some highlights worth timing a trip around:

Diamante: Festival del Peperoncino (September) -- the region's beloved chili pepper festival. Altomonte: Festival of Two Seas (July--August). Bagnara: Swordfish Festival (July). Camigliatello Silano: Wild Mushroom Festival (October). Castrovillari: International Festival of Folklore (August). Spilinga: Sausage Festival (August). Soverato Superiore: Eggplant Festival (September). Cosenza: Festival delle Invasioni (July). Vibo Valentia: Pasta Festival (July).

Easter is especially dramatic in Calabria. Elaborate processions take place in Catanzaro, Castrovillari, Laino Borgo, Caulonia Marina, and many smaller towns, each with its own traditions.
