Ponte Leproso

Ancient bridge on the Via Appia at the edge of Benevento’s old centre.

Ponte Leproso is one of Benevento’s quieter ancient survivals, a bridge associated with the route of the Via Appia as it entered the city. It lacks the immediate drama of the Arch of Trajan, but it helps explain Benevento as a Roman road town rather than just a place with isolated monuments.

The bridge is best treated as part of a wider walk through the city’s ancient layers. Look at the masonry, the river setting, and the practical logic of the route; it is a modest structure, but it has carried a great deal of history.
