Parco Reale

The 3km royal park stretching behind the palace, lined with fountains, canals, and the great cascade at its far end.

The Parco Reale is one of the largest royal parks in Europe. The formal section follows that long central axis, with the ponds and fountain groups of Diana and Actaeon, Venus and Adonis, and Ceres punctuating the route. Shuttle buses run the length of the park for those who don't want to walk; horse-drawn carriages are also available.

Set aside at least two hours for the park alone. The fountains only flow on certain days — check the official schedule before visiting, as the experience is dramatically different with or without the water running. The English Garden lies to one side of the main axis and rewards a separate visit.

A story
The central axis of the park runs in a dead-straight line for three kilometres from the rear of the palace to the foot of the Grande Cascata, dropping water down a series of mythological fountain groups along the way. Vanvitelli designed the whole sequence to be read as a single perspective from the palace windows — a landscape as architecture.
