Peschiera Grande

The Reggia's grand ornamental fish pond, once the stage for mock naval battles staged for the Bourbon court.

The Peschiera Grande sits within the palace grounds to the south-east of the main facade, a large rectangular pool that functions both as an ornamental feature and as a reminder of the Bourbon court's taste for theatrical spectacle. It is easy to pass by without stopping, which would be a mistake — the reflections of the palace in still water on a clear morning are among the best photographs you can take at the Reggia.

The pool is still stocked with fish, and the setting has a quiet dignity that contrasts with the busier parts of the grounds. Worth a few minutes of your time as you walk between the palace entrance and the park.

A story
The Bourbons used the Peschiera Grande not just to stock fish but to stage miniature sea battles — naumachiae — for the amusement of the court. Model warships were deployed on the water while spectators watched from the palace gardens. The tradition continued until the early 19th century, by which point Napoleon's wars had made the spectacle feel less like entertainment and more like recent history.
