Spiaggia di Chiaia sits below the southern edge of Forio, cut off from the road above by a cliff face. The only way down is via a narrow path with steps cut into the rock — an approach that effectively limits the crowds. The beach is a mix of sand and smooth volcanic pebble, with clear water and good snorkelling along the rock faces on either side.
In August, when every other beach on the island is packed, Chiaia stays relatively calm simply because of the access. The descent takes about 10 minutes and requires reasonable footing — worn-down flip-flops are not ideal. Bring everything you need, as there are no facilities beyond a seasonal bar. The walk back up is steep but short, and the beach faces west, so you get the full sunset from the sand.
