The Fiordo di Furore is a narrow gorge where a small stream cuts through the limestone cliffs of the Amalfi Coast to meet the sea in a hidden cove. The gorge is only a few metres wide at its base, closed in by rock walls that keep it in shadow for much of the day. A flight of steps descends from the road above to a small pebbly beach where fishing boats were once dragged up.
The bridge spanning the gorge was built in the 1950s as part of the Amalfi Drive, and it is from this bridge — 30 metres above the water — that annual cliff diving competitions are held. Outside competition season, you can stand on the bridge and look down into the gorge while the traffic roars past a foot behind you. The descent to the beach takes about 10 minutes down steep, sometimes slippery steps; the ascent back up is harder. There is no car parking at the gorge — take the SITA bus from Amalfi or Positano and ask the driver to let you off at Fiordo di Furore.
