The Garden of the Fugitives displays the largest single group of plaster casts of eruption victims found anywhere at Pompeii: 13 people clustered together in what was once a market garden on the southern edge of the excavated area. The casts are displayed in the open air, arranged approximately as they were found, and the effect is profoundly affecting — the preserved postures of people dying, frozen in the positions of their last moments.
The garden is in the less-visited southeastern part of the site, about a 15-minute walk from the main forum area. It requires some effort to reach, which means it is less crowded than the central sights and the experience is more contemplative. Give yourself time here.
