The Great Palaestra is one of Pompeii's large public spaces, set opposite the amphitheatre. It was built for exercise and games, with long colonnades around a broad central ground and a pool in the middle.
It is most rewarding as part of a walk through Pompeii's eastern side, where the scale of the sports ground contrasts with the tighter streets and houses nearby.
