House of the Tragic Poet

Famous Cave Canem mosaic and mythological wall paintings

A modestly sized but richly decorated house, famous for the entrance mosaic of a chained dog with the inscription Cave Canem — Beware of the Dog. The interior walls were covered in scenes from Greek mythology, most of which are now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The house became widely known through Bulwer-Lytton's novel The Last Days of Pompeii, where it served as the home of the protagonist Glaucus.
