Medieval art and tomb sculpture in the Palazzo Fava

Address Via Manzoni 4

The Civic Museum of Medieval Art occupies the fifteenth-century Palazzo Ghisilardi Fava. The strongest material is local — the tomb monuments of the professors of law of the University of Bologna, sculpted in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to show them lecturing to attentive students from elevated tombs.

The museum also holds a collection of Renaissance bronzes, Islamic ivories, an extraordinary set of medieval ceremonial keys, and the bronze statue of Pope Boniface VIII by Manno di Bandino. A good complement to the Pinacoteca for anyone interested in pre-Renaissance art.
