Palazzo d'Accursio

Bologna's city hall, with the Civic Art Collection and the Sala Borsa library

The Palazzo Comunale (still often called Palazzo d'Accursio after the jurist whose house was incorporated into the original building) has been the seat of city government since 1336. The brick facade carries a terracotta Madonna by Niccolò dell'Arca, a bronze statue of Pope Gregory XIII (a Bolognese pope), and a clock tower above the main gate.

Inside, the Collezioni Comunali d'Arte occupy the upper floors with three centuries of paintings and decorative objects from city collections. The connected Sala Borsa, built into the old stock exchange next door, has a glass floor showing Roman foundations excavated beneath.
