Built in 1385 and extended under Borso d'Este, the palace's famous Sala dei Mesi (Room of the Months) contains some of the finest 15th-century secular frescoes in Italy -- an astrological cycle by Ferrarese painters depicting the months, the zodiac, and the court life of the Este family. The detail is extraordinary: each month shows a scene of aristocratic life at the top, the relevant zodiac sign in the middle, and mythological figures at the bottom. Some panels are badly damaged, but those that survive are mesmerising.
