Ferrara's Renaissance core — the whole of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is compact enough to cover in a day on foot or by bicycle. The Este Castle, the Cathedral, and the frescoed Palazzo Schifanoia are the main draws. The Palazzo dei Diamanti hosts major temporary exhibitions. The Addizione Erculea — the Renaissance urban expansion — and the City Walls are best explored by bicycle.
