Antica Spezieria di San Giovanni

Historic monastic pharmacy preserving Parma's old apothecary rooms and tools.

The Antica Spezieria di San Giovanni is the old pharmacy of the Benedictine monastery beside San Giovanni Evangelista. Its roots go back to the medieval monastic tradition of preparing medicines, and the surviving rooms preserve the shelves, jars, mortars, and working atmosphere of a pharmacy that was once part science, part herb lore, and part religious duty.

It is a compact visit, but a distinctive one in a city better known for Correggio, opera, and food. The pharmacy sits close to Parma Cathedral and the Camera di San Paolo, so it works well as a small detour when you want a glimpse of everyday monastic skill rather than another grand church interior.
