Terme di Porretta

The thermal baths that put this small Apennine town on the map

The hot springs at Porretta Terme are the reason the town exists. Several natural springs emerge here with different mineral compositions, and the main thermal complex offers pools, treatments, and day passes. The water is warm, mildly sulphureous, and said to be good for the respiratory system — though most visitors come simply to relax.

The spa facilities have been modernized but retain the slightly old-fashioned atmosphere of a traditional Italian thermal town. The complex sits at the south end of the town center, walkable from the railway station and the central piazza. Day use without treatments is the most affordable option.

A story
The thermal springs here have been known since Roman times, and the waters were particularly fashionable in the 18th and 19th centuries. Giuseppe Verdi visited multiple times to take the waters — he wrote parts of several operas while staying in the area. The springs produce sulphureous, saline, and bicarbonate-rich water, each associated with different therapeutic claims.
