Limone sul Garda

Limone sul Garda is one of the prettiest villages on the western shore — a cluster of colourful houses wedged between the lake and the sheer limestone cliffs of the Gardesana road, with terraced limonaia (lemon-tree structures) covering the slopes behind. The name may or may not come from lemons; some historians argue it derives from the Latin limes (boundary), as Limone sat on the old frontier between Austrian and Italian territory.

The village is small enough to walk in 20 minutes but pleasant enough to linger in for several hours. There are good swimming spots at the lake's edge, a handful of restaurants serving lake fish, and the terraced gardens behind the village worth exploring. Limone is best reached by ferry from Riva del Garda (30 minutes) or by the spectacular Gardesana road, which tunnels and bridges its way along cliffs above the water.

A story
Scientists studying the population of Limone sul Garda in the 1980s discovered an extraordinary mutation in some residents: a variant of the ApoA-1 protein that appears to protect against cardiovascular disease. The mutation — dubbed ApoA-1 Milano — has been traced to a common ancestor from the 18th century and has since been the subject of extensive pharmaceutical research as a potential treatment for heart disease.
