Paradiso sul Mare

This extraordinary Art Nouveau building — its name means "Paradise on the Sea" — rises above the Anzio seafront like something from a Symbolist painting. Designed by the Italian architect Cesare Bazzani in the early 20th century, the palace combines organic forms, maritime motifs, and ornate ironwork in a style that looks as if the sea itself had been persuaded to take architectural form.

The building has had various functions over the years and is not always accessible inside, but the exterior makes it worth seeking out. It stands near the waterfront and is visible from the harbour promenade. Bazzani is better known for institutional buildings in Rome, which makes this seaside fantasy all the more surprising.
