The harbour is the social heart of Anzio. Fishing boats moor alongside pleasure craft, and the waterfront promenade that curves around the port is the obvious place to spend an evening. The daily fish market operates in the morning — arriving before 9am gives you the freshest catch and a genuine picture of the town's working identity before the tourist day begins.
Ferries for the Pontine Islands depart from here: Ponza takes about two hours by fast ferry, Ventotene a little longer. The islands are quieter, less developed alternatives to the crowded resorts of the Amalfi Coast, and Anzio makes a practical base for reaching them. The harbour restaurants along the waterfront serve excellent fresh fish — the local specialty is a simple preparation of whatever came in that morning, dressed with local olive oil.
