Sicily–Rome American Cemetery

Located in Nettuno, immediately adjacent to Anzio, the Sicily–Rome American Cemetery is the largest American military cemetery in Italy and one of the most impressive in Europe. Nearly 8,000 Americans are buried here, including soldiers who died in Sicily and at Anzio. The Star of David and the Latin cross alternate among the marble headstones, and a Wall of the Missing records thousands more whose remains were never found.

The memorial chapel and the carved maps inside the visitor centre tell the story of the Italian Campaign clearly and without triumphalism. The grounds are beautifully maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission and can be visited free of charge. Plan for at least an hour; the scale of the cemetery is humbling.
