Ceramic Workshops

Civita Castellana has been producing ceramics since at least the medieval period, and the industry remains economically significant today. The workshops along the Via Flaminia and in the lower town tend to specialise in industrial sanitaryware — the area around Civita Castellana produces a large share of Italy's bathroom ceramics — but alongside this there are studios making decorative and traditional pieces, some of them working in forms that trace back to Faliscan prototypes. The connection between ancient Faliscan pottery and the living craft tradition is sometimes overstated, but it is not entirely invented: the region has always had good clay and people who knew how to use it.

Several of the decorative studios welcome visitors and sell directly from the workshop. The pieces range from inexpensive painted tiles to serious ceramic art. If you are interested in seeing production rather than just buying, it is worth asking ahead — a few studios will show visitors the kilns and the throwing process. The market in the town centre sometimes has ceramic pieces as well, and is a more relaxed place to browse than the workshops on the main road.
