Alsium

The site of ancient Alsium, an Etruscan and later Roman settlement, lies between Ladispoli and Palo Laziale along the Via Aurelia. The ruins are not spectacular — the site has been built over for centuries and only fragments of wall and an ancient road are visible — but it provides context for the deep history of this coastline. The ancient port of Alsium served Roman aristocrats who kept villas along this stretch of coast.

The location is less visited than the famous Etruscan sites at Cerveteri (Caere) but is part of the same cultural landscape.

A story
Alsium later became the site of a villa owned by Pompey the Great, and after him by the Emperor Augustus. The historian Pliny the Younger describes visiting a friend's villa here and complaining about the noise from the nearby road — one of the earliest recorded complaints about traffic.
