Monti Simbruini Regional Park

Subiaco sits at the gateway to the Monti Simbruini Regional Park, a large protected area of beech forests, limestone ridges, and river gorges. The Aniene River carves through the park, and several well-marked trails start within a few kilometres of the town centre. The Valle dell'Aniene trail follows the river upstream through increasingly wild terrain; in spring, the riverbanks are lined with wildflowers and the valley echoes with birdsong.

Monte Livata, about 12 km north, has a small ski area in winter and good walking in summer, with views across the Apennines. The park is almost entirely day-trip territory from Subiaco and receives far fewer visitors than the more famous parks to the south.
