Tarquinia's Etruscan necropolis is one of the great archaeological sites of central Italy. The grassy plateau looks modest at first, but the tomb chambers below contain some of the best surviving Etruscan wall paintings.
Only a selection of tombs is open at any one time, reached by stairs from small protective huts. Pair the site with Tarquinia's archaeological museum for the clearest sense of the city that produced the tombs.
