Merula Bridge

A handsome ten-arched Romanesque bridge spans the Merula River at the edge of Andora, one of the more graceful pieces of medieval engineering on this stretch of the Riviera. The bridge once carried the old coastal road between Genoa and Ventimiglia, and it remains in use today as a pedestrian crossing and the starting point for walks up the Merula valley.

The valley above the bridge is pleasant walking country — olive groves, light woodland, and a few farmsteads. The path follows the river bank for several kilometres into the hills, making it a good option on days when the beach is too crowded or too hot. The lower Merula is also popular for small-scale freshwater fishing in season.

A story
The Merula creek is only 14 kilometres long, but it drains a significant area of the Ligurian Alps. In medieval times it was navigable for small craft as far as the bridge, and the bridge itself was the main river crossing on the old coastal road before the construction of the modern highway. The ten arches were a significant engineering achievement for their period.
