Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo

The church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo is the religious and architectural heart of Borgo Castello, the medieval hillside settlement above Andora. Built in the twelfth century in late Romanesque style, its plain stone facade opens into an interior with a single nave and several works of art accumulated over centuries of continuous use. The bell tower beside it is a landmark visible from the beach far below.

The church is best reached on foot from the town by a stepped lane that climbs through olive terraces. The walk takes about twenty minutes and is worth it for both the church and the views across the bay. The interior is kept open during daylight hours; there is a small collection of ex-votos donated by fishermen and sailors.

A story
The church was built in the twelfth century in the late Romanesque style typical of western Liguria — austere stone exteriors, a single nave, and a bell tower that once doubled as a watchtower against Saracen raids from the sea. The bell tower is one of the older surviving structures on this stretch of the Riviera delle Palme.
