Arnasca Olive Groves

The terraced hillsides around Arnasco are planted almost entirely with olive trees, and the local variety — pignola, known elsewhere in Liguria and Italy as arnasca — is specifically tied to this part of the Neva valley. The oil produced here is a delicate extra-virgin used across the Riviera delle Palme.

Walking through the groves is the easiest and most rewarding activity in the village, especially in autumn during harvest. The terraces climb the valley sides in narrow tiers, each one supported by dry-stone walls that have been maintained for centuries. From the upper groves the views extend down to Albenga and the coast.

A story
The local olive variety is called *pignola*, but in the rest of Italy it is known as *arnasca* — named after this village. An entire cultivar carries the village's name, which is a distinction that no mayor's plaque or tourist sign in Arnasco seems to bother pointing out, but which tells you more about the place than most things could.
