The Passo del Ginestra is a popular cycling route that connects the upper Impero valley with the Merula and Lerrone valleys along the border between the provinces of Savona and Imperia. Casanova Lerrone sits on this circuit, which makes it a natural stop for cyclists touring inland Liguria. The roads are quiet, the scenery is of olive terraces and wooded ridgelines, and the cols are genuinely challenging without being extreme.
For walkers, the same ridge provides excellent hiking on mule tracks and old trading paths between the valley villages. The circular trail taking in Casanova Lerrone, the Colle del Ginestra, and one or two of the neighbouring villages makes a half-day walk with wide views to the sea on clear days.
