Casanova Lerrone

Quiet Ligurian farming comune in the Lerrone valley, with feudal castle ruins and baroque churches.

Casanova Lerrone is a quiet farming comune in the upper valley of the Lerrone River, inland from the Ligurian coast between Albenga and Alassio. Its history is typical of the small fiefdoms that changed hands repeatedly between Genoa's noble families — Del Carretto, Clavesana, and Doria — and it was the centre of a short-lived uprising against Genoa in 1763–64, prompted by excessive taxation.

Several structures from the feudal period survive, including the Castello di Poggiolo (with seventeenth-century decorations, privately owned) and the ruins of the Del Carretto and Maremo castles. The baroque church of Sant'Antonino houses a polyptych from 1552 attributed to the school of Ludovico Brea, and the shrine of Nostra Signora della Visitazione at Degna has wooden sculptures attributed to Maragliano. The village sits on the Passo del Ginestra cycling circuit, a popular route connecting the Lerrone, Merula, and Impero valleys through quiet hill roads with views to the coast.
