Mule Paths into the Ligurian Alps

A network of old mule paths leaves Castelvittorio and climbs into the surrounding hills, eventually linking up with the high trails of the Regional Natural Park of the Ligurian Alps. The shorter loops descend into the Nervia gorge and back up to neighbouring Pigna; the longer routes climb to ridges with views across to the Maritime Alps and, on clear days, the sea at Ventimiglia.

The terrain is steep and the paths are not always well marked — a paper map (Carta dei sentieri) or a GPS app loaded with the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri tracks is sensible. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; high summer can be hot and dry, and winter sometimes brings snow.
