Sentiero Azzurro

The Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail, Trail No. 2) is the main coastal hiking path linking all five Cinque Terre villages. The full length is about 12 km, taking in the Via dell'Amore, the steep descent into Manarola, the climb up to Corniglia, the spectacular traverse above the vineyards to Vernazza, and the final push over the headland to Monterosso. It traverses a total of around 600 metres of ascent.

Parts of the trail close regularly after heavy rain and landslides — this has been the norm since the 2011 floods. Before setting out, check the current status with the national park or at any Cinque Terre Card point. The most reliably open sections are the Via dell'Amore (Riomaggiore–Manarola, almost flat) and the Vernazza–Monterosso stretch (steep and spectacular). The Corniglia–Vernazza section through the vineyards is among the finest walking in Liguria. A Cinque Terre Card is required to walk the trail and also covers the trains.

A story
The Sentiero Azzurro follows routes that local farmers and fishermen used for centuries to move between the isolated villages before any road existed. The path was formalised as a hiking trail in the 1960s, but parts of it are documented in maps going back to at least the 18th century. The terraced vineyards it passes through are a UNESCO World Heritage landscape in themselves.
