Volastra

Volastra is a tiny hamlet on the hilltop above Manarola, connected to it by a steep path that passes through some of the most photogenic terraced vineyards in the Cinque Terre. It has a church (Nostra Signora della Salute) and a handful of houses, and its main attraction is the panorama: views down to Manarola and out over the sea that are very different from the village-level perspectives.

The walk up from Manarola takes about 40 minutes on the path through the vineyards. From Volastra you can continue on the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre — the high-level trail that runs the length of the national park above the coastal villages — to Corniglia or back toward Riomaggiore. The path is quieter than the Sentiero Azzurro and gives a better sense of the agricultural landscape that sustains the villages below.

A story
Volastra is one of the oldest settlements in the Cinque Terre area, mentioned in documents dating back to 1056. It sits on the ridge above Manarola at 340 metres, accessible by a steep path through terraced vineyards. In the Middle Ages it was more significant than Manarola below — the hamlet of Volastra controlled the passes and the land routes when the coast was too dangerous to travel by sea.
