Castel San Giovanni

Restored hilltop fortress above Finale Ligure, guarding the old route through Finalborgo.

Castel San Giovanni stands above Finalborgo, the walled inland quarter of Finale Ligure, and gives the town its proper defensive context. The fortress was rebuilt and reshaped over time to control the routes between the coast and the valleys behind it.

The climb is part of the pleasure. From the castle you can look down over tiled roofs, limestone hills, and the narrow streets of Finalborgo, then drop back into town for food or continue toward the area's walking and climbing routes.
