Magliolo is the kind of place you stay in to escape the crowded coast — but the coast is close enough to be the day's outing. Pietra Ligure and its beach are 15 minutes down the valley. Finale Ligure, half an hour east, is the better town: a medieval old quarter, a long pebble beach, and the largest sport-climbing area in Italy. The Toirano Caves to the south-west are a striking limestone show-cave system, and the small inland villages of Calice Ligure and Rialto make for unhurried back-road drives.
