Del Carretto Castle

The ruins of the Del Carretto castle crown the wooded hill above Millesimo. Walls, a fragment of the keep, and traces of cisterns survive, with views down over the medieval street plan and across to the Bric Tana ridge.

It is a ten-minute climb up a marked path from the old town. The site is open and free; the masonry is loose in places so watch your footing.

A story
The Del Carretto marquises ruled the upper Bormida valley from this hilltop from the early thirteenth century. The castle was sacked repeatedly through the medieval and early modern wars and was finally abandoned for the lower palazzo in the seventeenth century.
