Santuario della Madonna del Deserto

The shrine of the Madonna del Deserto stands on a wooded slope a short walk above the town. The current eighteenth-century chapel, with its octagonal dome, replaces an earlier structure on the same site and was extensively rebuilt a century after it was first put up.

The setting — a stone clearing in chestnut woods, with the dome floating above — is the appeal. The chapel is locked outside service times but the walk is the point.
