Medieval Bridge over the Bormida

The twelfth-century stone bridge over the Bormida is Millesimo's most striking monument. A single span carries the road across the river, with a battlemented tower rising from the middle of the bridge; two pointed archways added in the fourteenth century pass through the base of the tower.

The bridge still carries pedestrians and the occasional car, and is the obvious place for a photograph. Stand on the upstream bank at the right time of day and you get the tower reflected in the slow water.

A story
The fortified tower in the middle of the bridge was a customs post — every cart that wanted to cross the Bormida between the upper valley and the Riviera coast paid a toll to the Del Carretto. The two archways added in the fourteenth century funnelled traffic into a single chokepoint where collection was easier.
