Capo Noli

Capo Noli is the dramatic limestone headland that forms the western edge of the town. The cliffs drop straight to the sea, and the coastal path that runs along the top offers some of the most spectacular views on the entire Italian Riviera. Looking east you see Noli's beach and towers; looking west the coast stretches past Varigotti toward Finale Ligure.

The cape is part of a protected marine area, and the water below the cliffs is clear and rich in marine life. Snorkellers and divers come specifically for the rocky underwater topography. The GeoTrek Noli trail, which starts at the cape, follows a route through the hills explaining the area's geological history through interpretation panels in both Italian and English. It is an easy half-day walk that combines sea views with an introduction to the region's ancient landscape.

A story
Capo Noli is geologically significant — the cliffs are composed of ancient limestone formed on the floor of the Tethys Sea roughly 200 million years ago, long before the Mediterranean existed in its current form. The cape was also a hazard for sailors for centuries, with its rocky headland and unpredictable currents claiming numerous ships. The MT Haven oil tanker disaster of 1991 occurred just offshore, and the wreck has since become one of the most-dived wrecks in the Ligurian Sea.
